Roast Beef with cream of mushroom sauce- Filipino Style

This recipe of Roast beef with cream of mushroom sauce is pot roasted. The beef is so tender and juicy and really simple to make.

When my parents still have their canteen, their bestseller dish, next to sisig,  was their roast beef. This is also one of the most requested dishes when we are having a gathering. Usually, when my Mama makes this, the beef is almost swimming in mushroom sauce, but I wanted to show the beautiful color and texture of the pot roast beef in the photos so I resisted the urge to do the same.

Skinless Longganisa

The smell of Longganisa being cooked is enough reason to get up in the morning. I don’t know about you, but in my (totally biased) opinion, Filipino breakfast are the best and there are so many choices. Heavy or light, sweet or savory and so on…think Tocino, longganisa, tapa, danggit, arroz caldo, tamales, suman, pandesal, champorado with tuyo, garlic fried rice and let’s not forget taho! Those are just some of my favorites.

But Longanissa is not limited to being a breakfast food, it can be served for lunch and dinner too, well at least I could eat them anytime of the day without complaint!

Homemade Taho Recipe (Soft tofu with syrup and tapioca pearls)

Try this Taho recipe (Soft tofu with syrup and tapioca pearls) and learn how to make Taho at home easily. This method uses Epsom salt and instant soy milk.

We grew up on this! Taho is a favorite after breakfast treat back when we were small and when we were not so small anymore. I remember having it every morning at weekends and like almost every day during school summer vacation. Our regular Taho peddler would usually come mid-morning and once we hear him shouting “Tahhoooooo” in his big melodious voice, we would come racing home, leaving whatever we are doing, to get our glasses and some money from our Mama or Papa.

Menudo Recipe

Have a feast with this classic Filipino Menudo recipe. A tomato-based stew of pork meat and liver usually served at special occasions like Fiestas.

May is the month for Flores de Mayo in the Philippines.  Flores de Mayo is an old tradition that we inherited from the Spanish time that gives tribute to Mama Mary by offering flowers at the altar in churches. It culminates with a ‘Santacruzan‘- a religious-historical pageant parade that depicts the finding of the Holy Cross by Queen Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor, Constantine the Great, who ended the prosecution of Christians.

Sago’t Gulaman

Try this Sago’t Gulaman drink. A Filipino sweet refreshment made from brown sugar syrup with tapioca pearls and almond jelly.

This post is actually a bit overdue because I made this sago’t gulaman the same time I made Taho. Well, simply because I have some brown sugar syrup and cooked tapioca pearls left from my homemade taho. I only had to make the almond jelly or gulaman in this case. ‘Sago’ is what we call the tapioca pearls in Filipino and ‘gulaman’ generally refers to gelatin.

Chicken Afritada

Try this Chicken Afritada recipe. A Filipino chicken stew in tomato sauce with carrots, potatoes and bell peppers.

Chicken Afritada is one of my Mama’s specialty. There is this slogan in Tagalog, “Sarsa pa lang ulam na!”.  And this dish perfectly fits this phrase. It translates to something like the sauce itself is good enough to be a viand. Does that make sense? As you know, Filipinos eat everything with rice. You do not eat a dish without rice!

Bicol Express

Bicol Express is a spicy pork stew cooked in coconut milk which is definitely one of the most popular dishes among Filipinos.
Bicol Express has it’s funny, if not weird, name from the train that travels the Naga(Bicol)-Manila route. Bicol is known in the Philippines for a lot of things such as the perfect coned, Mayon volcano, Pili nuts and, of course, for their love of spicy food.
